Hazard #8843

ID #8843
Status Fixed
Location TL 49038 17561
Location Description At the crown of the humped-back bridge over the River Stort in Spellbrook; near the level crossing. I'm not sure which out of Essex or Hertfordshire authorities are responsible since the border runs up the river!
Road Name Spellbrook Lane East or Dell Lane
Hazard Type Pothole
Hazard Description A group of about 5 potholes, 2 of which are dangerously deep. I rode into a pothole at this location less than a year ago but, fortunately, managed to maintain control and my bike survived. I believe the previous potholes here were repaired around March this year - but not very well.
These potholes present a greater than usual risk to cyclists since, firstly, on approaching from the East, one is descending a hill and consequently traveling at greater speed; secondly, because they are at the crown of the bridge, they are hidden from view until one is quite close.
Approximate Size The two larger holes are about 12 inches across.
Approximate Depth Maybe 2 to 3 inches
Approximate distance from Kerb About 3 feet from southern edge of road.
Date Encountered 16 Oct 2007
Date Added 17 Oct 2007
Planned Fix Date Unknown
